RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-MORROW'S MATCHES grammar meets technical ATTRACTIVE CURTAIN-RAISER The second series of matches in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior championship competition will be decided tomorrow when, as conditions promise to be much more suitable for open football, a better idea of tho relative strengths of the various teams should be obtained. Four interesting games have been set down for decision at Eden Park, where the principal attraction will be the contest between Grammar and Technical. These two teams, which will bo remembered for their lino display in the 1935 championship final at the. Show Grounds last year, are keen rivals and tho match is likely to bo stubbornly contested. The Grammar forward division is tho heaviest in tho competition and this may prove tho deciding factor in to-morrow's match. The curtain-raiser will be between Ponsonby and Training College, two teams which ahouid be well matched. The Training College side cave an attractive exhibition in its first came in senior football for two seasons and, as Ponsonby also favours tho open type of game, being strong in the backline itself, this match should provide some highlights.

The came set down for decision on the No. 2 field between Grafton and University will also bring two well-matched fifteens together. If Grafton is ablo to field a fullstrength pack, as it was unable to do last, week, it should be difficult to defeat. This should be a bright contest.

The fourth game at Eden Park, Marist against College Rifles, will bo decided on the No. 3 ground and, on foim shown last week, it should result in a comfortable win for the former team. The Marist pack ia particularly powerful, and W. Hadley should give hia team a liberal share of tho ball. . „ , Otahuhu will be having its first game of the season when it meets North Shore at. Sturgeß Park, Otahuhu. and should have little difficulty in accounting for the promoted ■ide. Otahuhu has a strong set of backs, which includes four representatives, and bright football is expected from the suburban team if the ground is dry. Manukau, which haß drawn the bye, will play a friendly game against tho Suburbs second division team at Point Chevalier. Following aro the teams:— MARIST Senior Grade.—First division: W. Dalbeth, C.
