PURSUED BY CONSTABLE
SCHOOL CHILDREN'S DRIVER FINED FOR INTOXICATION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Thursday The pursuit by a constable in a taxi of a motor-lorry in which school children were to be taken to their homes resulted in the appearance in the Opotiki Police Court to-day of Wharekihi Waiapti, who was charged with being intoxicated at Tirohanga while in charge of the vehicle. Accused, for whom Mr. G. Murray appeared, pleaded guilty and was fined £5. He also agreed to a prohibition order being issued. Waiapu was in Opotiki yesterday and had taken more liquor than was good for him, the police stated, when he started for Omarumutu, where he was due to take the school children to their homes in Waiawa. Tho matter was brought to tho notice of Constable Boasley, who obtained a taxi and went after accused. After some difficulty accused's motor-truck was headed off by the taxi near Tirohanga, and accused was arrested and brought back to Opotiki. Mr. Murray pleaded that accused's licence should not be taken from him, as tho members of tho school committee said they were quite satisfied that accused would not appear again on a similar charge.
