DISGUISE FOR LIQUOR
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI OFFENCE AT WHAKATANE [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE, Thursday had received information that this man was visiting hotels in disguise," said Constable Cummings in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Eric Davis, aged about 25, a Maori, of Te Teko, was charged with entering hotels and procuring liquor under disguise while a prohibited person. "Ho was well known in Te Teko and could not get liquor there, so ho started to wear big goggles and other means of disguise and come into Whakatane," added the constable. "The day I found him in the hotel he had a muffler over his head and there was just a bit of his cheek showing." Mr. Barry, who appeared for Davis, said Davis was suffering from toothache on the occasion of his arrest. He came in to see a dentist and was advised that a good brandy was the best thing to cure him. As regards the disguise, the muffler was worn because of neuralgia. • Defendant was fined £3, with £2 5s costs.
