NEXT PRESIDENT
AMERICAN NATION PARTIES' CANDIDATES FIGHT FOR NOMINATION By Telegraph—Press Associntion—Copyright 'Received Mny 6, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 5 The campaign of the Governor of Kansas, Mr. A. M. Landon, for the Republican nomination for the Presidency suffered its first reversal today. Incomplete returns from the California primary elections indicate that the voters in that State preferred an uninstructed delegation to the Convention rather than one pledged to Mr. Landon. This is significant as Mr. Herbert Hoover, who is reputed to be opposed to Mr. Landon, is likely to havo considerable influence with the delegation both in the voting for the party's nominee and in drafting the campaign. On the Democrats' side a delegation pledged to Mr. Roosevolt took a commanding lead over Mr. Upton Sinclair's followers and over advocates of the Townsend plan in South Dakota. Mr. Landon held a substantial load over Mr. W. E. Borah in the early voting. Mr. Roosevelt was not opposed in that State.
This was the first clear-cut contest between Messrs. Landon and Borah in a western State. It indicates that Mr. Borah is not as strong in this section as he was supposed to be.
