WAPITI STALKING

GOOD SPORT IN SOUTH VERY FEW CALVES SEEN, [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUNEDDi, Wednesday A Dunedin sportsman, Mr. G. Beid, who has returned from the Te Anaa district, where he spent a month wapiti stalking, reports that the herds are fairly strong numerically and the beasts are in good condition. A disquieting feature, however, was that very few calves were seen. The wapiti were finding ample food supplies, said Mr. Reid, and he had not noticed many signs of destruction to native bush. Mr. Reid's party was located on the Henry Saddle, at the back of the middle fiord of Lake Te Anau, and worked westward toward George and Caswell Sounds. They were there just after the roaring season, but although they did not see much of their quarry during the first two or three weeks, good sport was obtained in the last week. Nine bulls were stalked and several more were seen. Two good trophies, a 12pointer and a 14-pointer, were secured. One herd of 13 included four bulls, said Mr. Reid. There was a number of young bulls, which would be in. class condition in a few years. TINE HEADS SECURED SOUTHLAND SEASON REVIEWED [by telegraph OWN correspondent] KsVERCARGILL, Wednesday Although a few isolated parties are still out deer-stalking the season for 1936 has virtually concluded, at least as far as Southland is concerned. Conditions during the season were far from favourable, many parties being handicapped by wet weather. Deer were reported to be plentiful in most parts, however, and many good heads were secured. Stalking in the Lake Wanaka district, Mr. Willis Mcßae, of Benmore, secured a very fine 15-pointer, 44 inches in length with a spread of 42 3-8 inches. The best head for the season shot in Southland was secured by Mr. R. T. Lindsay,<of Waianiwa. It was a very fine 13-pointer, well developed with a spread of oS inches. Messrs. G. Buchanan and T. Christie, of Thornbury, experienced stormy conditions when after wapiti in the Glaisnoeh. One head secured by Mr. Buchanan was a 16-pointer with a length of 53 inches.
