Nicoll, president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, who leaves to-morrow on an extended business trip abroad. The Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., presented Mr. Nicoll with a purse of sovereigns from trotting clubs and the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and an illuminatod address expressing admiration for tho manner in which ho had carried out tho onerous duties pertaining to his office as president during the past 15 years, and testifying to his fairness, impartiality and tactfulness at all times; and to the important reforms for which he had been responsible in the interests of clubs and the sport of trotting. The address is signed by the Hon. W. Perry and Messrs. B. S. Irwin, H. Morpeth and F. 13. Graham. Mr. Perry said that Mr. Nicoll had adorned tho high office he occupied for so many years, and everyone with the interests of trotting at heart sincerely wished for his return to the position. Mr. Nicoll, in reply, said his work had been very happy. He dealt with a number of reforms and stressed the pressing need of additional days' racing for trotting clubs. MR. G. J. BARTON'S TEAM GOOD PRICES REALISED DESERT CHIEF UNDER OFFER [by TKLEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Wednesday Mr. G. J. Barton has returned from Australia, where he went on a flying visit in connection with the Gold Fox case. Mr. Barton states that, although tho case was apparently decided on a question of fact, the stipendiary stewards did not take any action until tho following race, when W. Jenkins, after being weighed out to ride again, was hailed before the stewards. Usually, when anything suspicious occurs about the riding of a horse, the rider is immediately taken before the stewards. When Mr. Barton's horses were sent under the hammer, Palatinate was sold at 650 guineas, Foreign Star at 350 guineas, Riddle at 500 guineas, Gold Fox at 160 guineas, Worship at 75 guineas, and Jack Horner at 500 guineas. Desert Chief is under offer at 1500 guineas. Autumn Wind, who is in tho rough, did not go under tho hammer and Reminder was also kept out of tho ring. Desert Chief will probably chango owners, as he lias developed into a promising colt. He cost 500 guiueas as a yearling. TEAMS FOR SYDNEY SEVEN HORSES TO SAIL [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON. Wedneaday H. E. Russell, with Golden Wings, Golden Treasure, Bcijgal Lancer and Mala, will leave for Sydney by the Wanganella to-morrow. By the samo steamer A. D. Webster is sending over Martinborough, also a rising two-year-old bay filly by Pink Coat from Seaside and, like Martinborough, owned by Mr. E. D. Martin. Webster's team is completed by one of his own breeding, a rising two-year-old chestnut iilly by Lackham from Moutoa Lady, for which ho has claimed the name Realise. Webster himself will not travel until next month. Lone Raider was returned to his owners from Sydney by the Wanganella, arriving at Wellington to-day.
