FAT STOCK SALES

PRICES AT WESTFIELD BRIGHT TONE GENERAL SMALL YARDING OF BEEF Values ruled very firm in all sections at the weekly Westfield fat stock sale yesterday. Beef was again in comparatively short supply, the total yarding being well under 600. Although the recent cold weather has almost stopped pasture growth no heavy yardings are anticipated till after the first frosts, and a firming market is expected in the near future. The small offering of steers contained a good proportion of well-finished sorts. Competition was keen and price levels ruled fully up to those of last week, with extra choice ox beef selling at 29s per 1001b. In the cow beef market the quality was mixed, but a keen demand brought a slight improvement on late rates. The best sale in the ox beef market was that of an attractive line of steers from Mr. A. E. Urquhart, of Karaka, with a top price of £l2 7s 6d. In the cow and heifer section, prime heifers from Mr. H. Robinson, of Putaruru, made to £8 10s. Calves came forward in full numbers and a bright sale resulted. Medium and light vealers were in particular demand and all young calves showing condition sold well. Month-old sorts made as much as £2 and bobbies sold freely. The pick of the market was a prime heavy heifer from Mr. W. A. Jefferis, of Waerenga, which sold for the good price of £6 3s. Sheep, Lambs and Pigs There was a small yarding of sheep the result of the narrow margin between values for forward stores and fat sheep. Buyers were actively engaged in filling requirements bringing a firm market for all wethers and a rise in values for ewes. Maiden ewes sold to as high as 275. The lamb pens contained an average yarding, some of excellent quality, and late rates were easily obtained. Although there was a falling off in the supply of pigs, tho yarding was still a large one. Competition was keen throughout and late rates were fully maintained. Heavy bac'oners sold to G7s, with an average of 66s 3d for a line of 24 from Glendene Farm. Store pigs met with a better demand at slightly advanced prices. Average values per lb. for fat pigs worked out at from s}d to 5Jd for baconers, and from to 5Jd for porkers.
