MILK FOR SCHOOLS
CITY COUNCIL SCHEME CHARGE ON RATEPAYERS A total of approximately 300 gallons of milk is still being distributed daily to the children in 27 schools and kindergartens in the Auckland city area by the Auckland City Council. This scheme is being undertaken by the council with the backing of the Government, but so far the whole cost is being borne by the council. Approximately 6000 children up to the fourth standard are receiving this valuable addition to their daily diet, and there are many evidences that tho service is greatly a p preci a tod. When tho present scheme was under consideration by the council last October it was decided to supply half a pint a day to these children, and the Government was then asked to pay half the cost. Tho Government asked that the scheme be proceeded with, and that the council supply tho Government with full details. Tho schemo has been carried on since then under this arrangement. The aim was to supply tho milk to the children in individual bottles, but this aim has not yet been completely achieved. Tho"* treatment and distribution of tho milk is in tho hands of two companies. One of them handles 201 gallons daily, and this is all supplied in bottles, while the other firm supplies 98 gallons of loose milk. The children who receive their milk in bottles are also supplied with drinking straws. The council also makes itself responsible for tho supply of these straws, and some idea of the number required can be gathered from tho fact that the council is now asking for alternative quotations for the supply of 500,000, 750,000 and 1,000,000 of these drinking straws.
