CREATING EMPLOYMENT

Sir, —Your correspondent Thomas A. F. Stone in his excellent letter states that the average size of farms in New Zealand is 500 acres, and urges that the Government should aim at placing more people on small farms. Is it not correct that the bulk of these large farms are held under mortgage which the mortgagee does not pay off? All these mortgages will now be dealt with by the State Advances Department, and it seems to me that a new line should be adopted. The State Advances Department should split tliesa farms into smaller holdings, and offer them to the present experienced farm labourers and share-milkers with a proportional share of the mortgage. As soon as the debt is paid off the exlabourer would be in possession of the land, and soon be prosperous. This would solve two problems—mortgage debt and unemployment. Ajax.
