RATES UNCHANGED

ONE TREE HILL FINANCES HIGHER LEVIES ON BOROUGH Estimates and proposed rates for. the year 1936-37 were approved at a meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council last night. It was announced by the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, that the aggregate rate, which it was agreed to levy on June 3, would not have to be increased, although a net increase of £167 would accrue as a result of new buildings erected in the past year. Estimated receipts, exclusive of wages under Scheme 5 and subsidy on wages, totalled £32,556, compared with £32,933 last year. Provision had been made for payments totalling £33,501, against last year's total of £33,206. The estimated credit at March 31, 1937. was £6969, a reduotion of £945. Of the reduction £525 was due to the increase in levies on the borough, and it was agreed to encroach on reserves to the extent of £544 on purely borough services. This was to increase the amount available for permanent works, including £6035 for street works and £603 for waterworks. The increase of £525 in levies was equivalent to a rate of 9-10 din the pound in the sewered area, and id in the pound in the unsewered portion. The hospital rate would require to be increased by jd to £>2d, but this would be offset by a corresponding reduction in the lighting rate. "Our reasons for suggesting that the reserves be drawn upon instead of passing on the increase is that if the promised revaluation of the borough is made this year, and the capital values are reduced as expected, some measure of relief will accrue next year in respect of these levies," he said. Permission to hold a street collection in the borough on May 29 was granted to the Community Sunshine Association. The council decided to purchase £3 3s worth of special stamps to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the landing at Anzao.
