BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
HIGHER WAGES SUBSIDY
The Department of Labour, Wellington, advised the Birkenhead Borough Council last night of its approval, ill connection with the drainage scheme, of the increase in the rate of subsidy on this standard work to £2 5s per man-week, in lieu of £1 15s, as from June 1. This was granted on the understanding that the council intended to pay higher wages from June 1, and also to increase the pay from that date for any men employed on intermittent works to the nearest half-day above the new allocations, which come into force on Juno 1.
Further correspondence was received regarding the suggestion of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association that tho wharf at Onetaunga should be re-erected nt Fitzpatrick's Bay. Tho council deckled to defer tho matter pending completion of the concrete wharf.
