ATTEMPTED ESCAPE
AMERICAN "DEVIL'S ISLAND n PRISONER MEETS HIS DEATH SAN FRANCISCO, April 28 A prisoner, Joe Bowers, was killed yesterday at the Federal prison on Alcatraz Island in an attempt to escape from what has been termed the American "Devil's Island." Bowers was shot by guards when he scaled the wire fence surrounding the prison. His body fell from the cliff into the water and his neck was broken. When recovered later the body was found to have been riddled with bullets.
