NEW KING OF EGYPT

The death of King Fuad of Egypt removes a monarch whose influence was of considerable value in moderating the political turmoil that in recent years vexed his country. His position was difficult. Popular agitation, inspired and directed by parties at variance with each other and in some instances violently opposed to British policy for Egypt, went at times to reckless extremes, and the operation of the parliamentary machinery was occasionally obstructed by dangerous intrigue. King Fuad did all that was possible in a constitutional monarchy to allay such friction, while seeking to promote the British interests he was pledged, for Egypt's own sake, to serve. He did this with all the greater success because his own instinct's were markedly benevolent and kindly. The fact that his son and successor has not yet attained legal majority introduces an element of uncertainty. Educated in British thought and ways, the new king will doubtless be eager to exercise an influence akin to that of his father, but his opportunity will for a time be restricted. Cabinet can act for him only until the elections at the end of this week, when arrangements will have to be made for a Regency Council. Much depends, therefore, on the result of the elections. Should the present composition of Parliament remain, or be improved from the British point of view, the treaty negotiations now proceeding will be still capable of favourable handling ; otherwise there may be a recurrence of violent Egyptian agitation for the impossible. King Farouk, although only a titular ruler and inexperienced, may be trusted to play an intelligent part. He will have the good wishes of the British people.
