SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND LONDON, April 27 As the result of long driving and fine putting, James Ferrier, of New South Wales, returned a score of 72 in the first qualifying round of the Scottish amateur championship, which is being played at Carnoustie. Hector Thompson, holder of the championship, and Jack McLean, 1932-33-34 winner, share the lead, with 71. The Scottish amateur championship is open to "amateur golfers, either of whose parents is Scottish. The entrant must be a British subject and no one who has ever played for either England, Ireland or Wales, or taken part in the "close" championships of those countries since January 1, 1922, is eligible. Two qualifying rounds are played and the,lowest 64, and all who tie at that figure, are eligible for the match play stages. With the exception of the final, which is played over 36 holes, all the rounds are decided over 18 holes. The Carnoustie course measures 6701 yards, par for which is fixed at 72. The amateur record for the course of 69 is held by J. S. Anderson, and seven players share the professional record of 71.
