Mr. W. T. Anderton, M.P., left last evening for Wellington. Sir George Elliot left for the South by train yesterday afternoon. Mr. P. W. Maddock, general manager for Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer (N.Z.), Limited, is visiting Auckland. He is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. R. St. John Beere has been ap. pointed acting-Consular Agent for France at Wellington during the ternporary absence of the Consul. Mr. L. T. Whelan has arrived in Auckland from Dunedin to take up hin duties as manager of the Standard Insurance Company, Limited. Mr. H. F. von Haast, of Wellington, pro-chancellor of the University of New Zealand, left by the Aorangi yesterday for Vancouver, en route to England. Mr. N. S. Falla, managing-director of the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, was a passenger for Wellington by the limited express last evening. Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, district medical officer of health at Christchurch, has been r'e-elected president of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute. Mr. A. S. Wright, Secretary for Native Affairs in Fiji, has been appointed Administrator and Colonial Secretary of St. Vincent and the Windward Islands. Mr. E. W. Bennett, M.Sc., of Canterbury University College, has been appointed research worker in the bacteriological department of the Otago Medical School. Mr. L. Hill, chief postmaster at Napier, will shortly retire on completion of 40 years' service with the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr. Hill was formerly postmaster at Whangarei. Mr. A. S. Froggatt, of Invercargill, president of the Southland Building Society, left Auckland by the Aorangi yesterday, en route to Europe. Ho intends to investigate the working of building societies abroad. Mr. E. Abbey Jones, managing director of the Southland News Companv. Limited,, will leave Auckland by the" Mariposa on Saturday with Mrs. Jones for a four months' tour of Hawaii, the Far East and Australia. The Hon. J. Alexander, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, the Hon. A. Burns, the Hon. C. J. Carrington, the Hon. E. R. Davis, the Hon. F. E. Lark, the Hon. B. Martin and the Hon. J. Trovethick, M.L.C.'s, left for Wellington by train yesterday. Mr. J. Melling, town clerk-designate, accompanied by Mrs. Melling, left by the Aorangi yesterday for a tour abroad. He was farewelled at the wharf by a large number of the staff of the Auckland City Council. Mr. Melling expects to return about October 26. Commander C. D. Arbuthnot, whd was senior lieiitenant-commander of the cruiser Dunedin in New Zealand in 1932-35, has been appointed to H.M.S. Tamar, depot ship at Hongkong. Commander Arbuthnot was promoted at the New Year while on special duty with the Mediterranean base defences. Captain and Mrs. G. HumphreysDa vies, of Clevedon, who are visiting England, have been staying at Lydney Park as the guests of Lord and Lady Bledisloe. On arrival in London Captain Humphreys-Davies conducted researches at the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in connection with his study of Oriental porcelain.
