ROTORUA ROAD

MOTORISTS' CRITICISM MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS HIGHWAYS BOARD'S POLICY The policy of the Main Highways Board in regard to the main road between Rotorua and Auckland, and other arterial roads, was outlined by the motorists' representative on the board, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, when criticism about certain portions of the road, which appeared in the Herald yesterday, was referred to him last night. Mr. Wynyard said it was pne of the board's intentions, subject tx> its finances being available for the purpose, to push on with the tar-sealing of arterial roads. The board was continuing the scaling of the main road southward from Hamilton at the present time, and it was expected that, within 12 months the work would be completed as far as the end of th* Waipa County. "The sealing of roads has now become such a boon to the motoring public, and also to the board and local bodies on account of maintenance costs, that it is one of our particular aims" and objects to push this .development forward as much as possible," added Mr. Wynyard.

Referring to the complaints about the unsealed surface between Cambridge and the top of the Mamaku Hills, Mr. Wynyard said the board controlled the portion of the road over the hills with the assistance of a small contribution from the Matamata County Council. Tho remaining portions were under the control of the County Council. "The road from Rotorua to tho top of the Mamaku Hills and also portion* from Cambridge through tho country area have recently been sealed," continued Mr. Wynyard. "The intervening section is now the subject of a survey with a view to improving the alignment of the road before arrangements are made for preparatory work." In tho meantime, it was the board's policy to have proper maintenance carried out, stated Mr. Wynyard. He had communicated with the board and tho district engineer in Auckland with a view to obtaining a report on the matter, and tho putting in hand of tho necessary maintenance work. The position had been aggravated by the recent heavy traffic, and the dry weather.
