AUCKLAND FRENCH CLUB
PRESENTATION OF PRIZES The Auckland French Club held its opening meeting of the winter session last night in the Penwomen's Club rooms. The president, Mr. G. S. Coldham, and Mrs. Coldham received the guests, All attractive programme was presented, which included two violin solos, "On Wings of Song" and "Tambourin Chinois," rendered by Miss Ida Lockwood; two piano solos, by Mrs. Reed, "Rush Hour in Hongkong" and "Clair de Lune," and two songs by Miss Berta Carr, "La Chanson de l'Odieu" and "Russian Song." Miss Mary Pilkington also contributed a French monologue, "La Mode et l'Evolution." The president, in a happy speech, extended a welcome to those present, among whom were many new members, and expressed regret at the unavoidable absence of the president d'honneur, M. Edouard Joubert. A French play, "La Grammaire," was greatly appreciated. The producer was M iss E. Hall and the vaiious parts were taken by Miss Marion Macdonald, Messrs. A. Thompson, 0. Gillespie, J. Richards and Henri Cabouret. Supper was served at 10 o'clock and brought to a close a very enjoyable gathering. An interesting feature of the evening was the presentation of prizes in connection with the secondary schools competition in reading dictation and conversation in French, conducted annually by the Auckland French Club. The prizes each year are presented by the French Alliance of Paris and at the opening meeting last night they were handed to the successful competitors by the president, Mr. G. S. Coldham. The recipients were: —Prizes: First, Winifred June Barter (Epsom Girls' Grammar School); second, Arthur I. McCutchan (Otahuhu Technical High School). Certificates: Mary Isabel Davidson (Auckland Girls' Grammar School), Arthur W. S. Stuckey (Mount Albert Grammar School) and Joan Helen Mascull (Epsom Girls' Grammar School).
