AGRICULTURE POST
POSITION OF DIRECTOR MR. A. H. COCKAYNE MENTIONED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Monday Although no official announcement has been made, it appears that Mr. A. H. Cockayne, for the past seven years assistant-director of agriculture, is likely to be the new director in succession to Dr. C. J. Reakes, whose resignation was recently announced.
Mr. Cockayne, who is a son of the late Dr. Leonard Cockayne, of Wellington, was born in 1880. He entered the Department of Agriculture in 1904 as assistant-biologist. Four years later he attained full rank in that service. In 1927 he was appointed director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, and five years later became director of the plant research station at Palmcrston North. Mr. Cockayne is recognised as an authority on agriculture and botany, particularly grassland fanning. He has contributed many papers on agricultural subjects to numerous scientilic publications.
