DEVONPORT NAVAL BASE

NEW COMMANDER ARRIVES SERVICE IN CHINA STATION To take command of H.M.S. Philomel and to become officer in charge of the Devonport Naval Base, in succession to Commander B. C. B. Brooke Commander C. B. Tinley arrived by the Tamaroa from London on Friday morning, accompanied by his wife. Commander Tinley will take over his new duties during the next few days and Commander Brooke will leave from Auckland by the Rangitano on May 7. During Friday afternoon the two officers paid formal calls on the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. C. G. Macindoe. Commander Tinley's service with the Royal Navy dates from 1917, when lie joined as a special cadet and was appointed a midshipman to H.M.S. Lion, flagship of the Battle Cruiser Squadron. From 1919 to 1921 he saw service in river gunboats on the China station and was later, on the same station, in the flagship of Admiral Sir Frederick Feeyer. He was till recently first lieutenant-commander at the Southampton Naval Barracks.
