INCREASE IN LEVIES

WELLINGTON HOSPITAL NECESSARY FOR EFFICIENCY [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday A sharp increase on the expenditure side was budgeted for in the estimates adopted by the Wellington Hospital Board on Thursday night. The levy on contributing local bodies involves increases from 19 per cent for the Wellington City Council to us much as 44 per cent for outside local authorities. Several members predicted strong dissatisfaction among the contributing authorities, but it was contended that the budget had been pruned to the lowest point consistent with efficiency and justice to the board's staff. The board's budget last year resulted in a deficit of £13,000, and it was estimated that the hospital this year would require £27,000 above last year's estimate. an increase of 20 per cent. It was pointed out that the board had now to take into account the economies effected during the depression years, which could no longer be continued.
