STRANGE POLICE CHARGE

ILLICIT WHISKY CONSUMED IRISHMAN'S ADMISSION / _____ LONDON, April 23 Beting in possession of poteen (the Irish term for illicit whisky) by carrying it in his stomach, was the strange charge made against Nicholas Mangan. "The police gave evidence that Mangan smelt of poteen and that he admitted drinking some. Counsel for the defence said it was ridiculous to summon a man on his own admission. The prosecution must fail because it could not produce the poteen as evidence.

The Castlebar' (County Mayo) magistrates sided with the contention of the police that the confession was sufficient proof of possession, and sentenced Mangan to a month's imprisonment.
