ANOTHER ESCAPE
WERAROA FARM BOYS TWO NOW AT LIBERTY PROTEST MADE BY SETTLERS [by TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent] PALMERSTOX NORTH, Thur»day Another boy from the Weraroa training farm made his escape from the institution last evening and so far has not been recaptured. There are now two boys at liberty, the lad who made his escape earlier this week not having been retaken. His three companions were caught soon after the quartette made a- dash from their dormitory. In a protest against the frequency of escapes from the training farm, residents of Buckley and Ihakara, who have suffered most from the depredations of the boys, have communicated with Mr. C. L. Hunter, M.P. The settlers have asked that a protest regarding the escapes be lodged with the Hon. P. Fraser, Minister of Education. It is felt that while it maj be conceded that in an honest endeavour to instil into these delinquents-.a better conception of life a certain of amount of freedom should be allowed it has become evident that the system under which they are trained is' lri Urgent need of overhaul. One of the causes of the trouble lies in the fact that the institution at Weraroa is called upon to deal with too many diverse types of uncontrollable boys. Apparently the only method of selection is by age and locality and all delinquents, no matter how far they are removed from normal, are sent to the one institution, with the result that those in charge are forced to apply much the satno methods to many different types.
