During the War

I wanted this horso to dio happy, and I wanted desperately badly that it should have a drink of water, so 1 just prayed for all I was worth. 1 put every particle of strength I had into that very simple prayer: " Somehow, somo way, God send us water!" After a bit 1 said to myself: "God helps those who help themselves. I've looked everywhere for water, there isn't a drop within miles, but I've got to get up, and though it is quite hopeless I've got to look again." So I walked round slowly in a circle, although tho ground was so bare that I could see over a largo area. Then, quite close at hand, I saw a gleam ;

there, under n tiny sage bush, was a petrol tin with the lid off and inside 1 could see that it was half full of water. There had been no rain for weeks. I don't know how it got there, but that didn't matter; there it was. I took it to the horse, and it was ablo to have one long, delicious drink. With the few drops left over I bathed its wounds.— R. Kennedy-Cox.
