DISCUSSION UPON TOURS APPOINTMENT OF SELECTORS THREE FROM EACH ISLAND [BY/ telegraph—owx correspondent] WELLINGTON. Thursday Delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union spent some time discussing whether Canada or Japan should be invited to send a Rugby team 'to the Dominion. Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the management committee, said that Mr. P. MartinSmith had stated that the New Zealand University was anxious to have a return visit from Japan, but Mr. Dean thought it would be inadvisable for any team to come to- New Zealand to plav & section of the community. Mr. Dean said there had been difficulty in finding out the date upon which the South 'African team would leave for New Zealand in 1937. The best they could discover was that the team would leave •early in July and play eight matches in Australia and 21 in New Zealand. Discussion took place on the advisability ©f accepting :.n invitation from, the RuU y Football Union of Canada to visit the Dominion. Mr. Dean said it would cost an Other £IOOO to bring a team from Canada as compared with a team from Australia. Dr' G. J. Adams, Wanganui. moved that Canada be invited to send a team to New Zealand this year, and Mr. H. .Harris, Otago seconded the motion. Major T J. King. Wellington, moved as an amendment thnt the management committee be asked to prepare reports on t.he relative costs of bringing teams from Canada and Japan to the Dominion. The amendment was carried by 34 votes to 28. A further amendment, that a ctennite invitation be extended to Canada to eencl a team to New Zealand an ISMS. Some discussion took place concerning the date for the inter-island match. Mr. Dean ■aid the committee had suggested that the match should be played at Chrintchurch on August 15. This was agreed to. Mr. S. F. Wilson, Canterbury, made a plea for more matches for the smaller unions. Tours made in the pant were too late in the season. He considered the smaller unions should be grouped and treated as a minor union. Matches should be played in July and minor South Island ■unions could play minor unions in the North Island. Such a scheme would cost over a four-year period a little over £lo®°. Delegates considered the scheme would not meet the situation, and M.r. Wilson s motion to recommend the scheme to tu» management CQpimitte was defeated. It was decided to again make a grant of £750 toward the furtherance of school football. A recommendation to the management committee that three selectors for teams to meet Australia be appointed for each island and that the committee hold office for two years in view of the visit of tile South African team wa3 adopted. . ; Delegates agreed to accept the Dominions and Laws Committee offered at the Rugby conference in London in December. Mr. Dean said the delegates at the 1-iondon conferences were very keen on getting a seat on the International Rugby Board. After discussion the Rugby Union of England offered the Dominions and Lawe Committee in ,future any proposed alterations to the laws of the game would be sent to this committee. Mr. Dsan moved that the suggestion for the Dominions and Laws Committee be approved. This was seconded by Dr. G. J. Adams, Wanganui. Mr. J. Prendeville, Wellington, one of the New Zealand delegates to the London conferences, said they had found the Rugby Union of England out to help the Dominion unions in every way they could, b(ut they were up against a brick wall a« far as obtaining a seat on the International Board was concerned. He considered that when the Dominions and Laws Committee was brought into being it would. gi\*e overseas unions all they* had been aiming at and would be a stepping stone to a supreme Rugby council for the Empire. The motion was carried. SOUTH AUCKLAND UNION /ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE SEASON [prom our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Thursday At the annual m'eeting of the South .'Auckland Rugby Union, held at Pukekohe •delegates were present from the Manukau, Waiuku. Pukekohe, Franklin and Mangata- " whiri Sub-Unions. The Manukau delegates reported that the Southern, United Club, which played in the Auckland competitions last .year, • drawing players from the sub-.union a territory, would probably not function this season.
