PUKEKOHE BOROUGH
IMPROVEMENT IN FINANCES SEVERAL ACCOUNTS IN DEBIT [from OUR owx correspondent! PUKEKOHE, Thursday " This satisfactory position reflects the change in economic conditions and certainly appears to indicate the advent of a more prosperous period," said the town clerk, Mr. S. Bish, at a meeting of the Pukekoho Borough Council last night, in presenting the balancesheet for the year ending March 31. The general, street lighting and rubbish collection accounts were in credit, and the hospital, sanitary, water, town district interest No. 1, and borough interest No. 2 accounts were in debit. All debit balances, with tho exception of the cemetery account, were more than covered by outstanding rates, subsidies or fees. The total receipts for the year had been £20,882 lis and total expenditure £20,549 9s, leaving a balance of receipts over expenditure of £333 2s lOd. Mr. Bish said that while the accounts, with the majority of rate revenue accounts in debit, could not be regarded as being in the best of positions, they nevertheless showed a decided improvement on last year and could be considered satisfactory. The sum of £9613 lis had been struck in rates, and collections, along with tho Government subsidy, had amounted to £8517 16s, making the total collection percentage 88.6. Tin? total percentage for the past two years had been 85.7 and 84.4. Owing to the question of the fixing of new award wages and other rising costs, it was decided to delay the framing of the estimates.
