COLD AND SQUALLY IMPROVEMENT FOLLOWING' The weather report an# forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening bv the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —The last of the intense westerly depressions of the recent extensive series has been crossing the Dominion to-day. An anti-cyclone covers eastern Australia "and is advancing on to the Tasman Sea. Indications are for north-westerly to westerly winds from Canterbury northward; southerly thence southward, and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion by to-morrow morning. Moderate to strong generally and still of gale force in places. Seas rough to high on the west coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits; elsewhere rather rough to rough, but rising on the ea?t coast. In the eastern Tasman Sea, westerly at first in the northern portion, but winds soon becoming south-westerly or southerly generally, strong to "gale force, with raugh to high seas. Weather unsettled and squally, with at times rain in most districts." Snow on the ranges of the South Island and hail in places. Temperatures becoming cold. Conditions beginning to improve tomorrow, especially in western districts. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST SHOWERY AND COLDER The-Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Moderate to strong westerly winds, backing to south-westerlies. Tho weather is .likely to bo squally, changeable and showery and becoming colder. Seas will be rough to high on the west coast and moderate on the east coast, but rough offshore. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—Dull, showery weather was experienced yesterday. There was a fresh northerly wind and light showers fell throughout the day. The minimum temperature on Wednesday night was 55.1 degrees and the maximum yesterday 59 degrees. Christchurch. —The day was fine, but there was slight rain in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 67.5 degrees and the minimum 56.6 degrees. The barometer, after falling to 29.30 in., rose last night tojj!9.o2in. Dunedin. —There was a very slight breeze from the north-west and except for brief periods the sky remained overcast all day. The barometer was steady at 29.35 in.
