FIRED AT STREET LAMP

MAN CONVICTED AT WAIHI [I!Y TELEGRAPH OWN COHRKSPONDENT] WAIIIJ, Wednesday Charges of unlawfully discharging a firearm within the borough, of procuring a firearm without a permit, and of wilfully damaging a street lamp, wero admitted hv Keith A. P. Koss (Mr. Clark) in the Waihi Magistrate's Court to-day. Robert Vincent Hollis was charged with having delivered possession of a firearm without a permit. lie also pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant W. Blacke said Ross discharged a firearm in Boundary Ho,-id and frightened people. Defendant, who was on licence, had a job to go to and since the offence had been behaving himself very well. Hollis said he had lent Hoss a rifle to kill a beast for some Maoris, but it had not been returned as soon as ho expected. Mr. Clark said Ross had been thrown from a horse some years ago and had got an injury to his brain. Ross did not remember firing at the lamp. The Magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien: Fifty per cent, of the troubles here seem to be due to drink. If Hollis had gone after the rifle none of the charges would have been made.

On the first two charges Hoss was convicted and discharged and on the third he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. Hollis, to whom it was ordered that the rifle be returned, was fined 10s and costs.
