SCHOOL GRADING
MANY ALTERATIONS FIVE-YEAR-OLD ADMISSIONS ADJUSTMENTS IN STAFFING Tho readjustment of school grading and staffing as a result of the readmission of five-year-old children to primary schools was considered at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday. A large number of teachers are likely to he affected by the alterations, whidi follow on a regulation recently gazetted to cope with the situation caused hv increased attendances, that schools he graded on 95 per cent of the roll number at March 31. The usual system is to grade oil the average attendance for the preceding year ended August 31. A report was submitted showing that approximately 100 schools in the board s district could be alfeeted by the new regulations. Discretionary power was given, however, for schools to he retained in their present grades if the board was satisfied that the increased attendance was not likdj' to be maintained. It was reported that —0 schools were considered to be in this position, and it was decided to leave them in their present grades, so that the number that will rise in grade is 110. The effect of these increases is that a largo number of schools at which temporary assistants have been employed will under the regulations now bo entitled to permanent assistants, and tho permanent positions will be advertised by the board. iu many other cases tho positions now occupied by teachers will rise in grade through tlie regrading of the schools. These cases were referred to tho senior inspector for recommendations whether the teachers should be promoted without competition, or be transferred to other schools and the higher graded positions thus rendered vacant thrown open for competition, Tho recommendations of tho senior inspector will be submitted to tho board at its next meeting.
