PREVENTION OF CRUELTY

AFTERNOON BRIDGE PARTY Tim Society for tlio Prevention of Cruelty to Animals hold a bridge party for the purpose of raising funds at the Farmers' Trading Company tearooms yesterday aftw.noon. '1 lie function was organised by the bridge circle of the ladies' committee, whose efforts were rewarded by the attendance of about 200 pi avers. In the course of a short address 011 the need for the work of the society, the president, Mr. Spencer Mason, remarked that it might be thought that in those enlightened times cruelty to animals was negligible, but, unfortunately, the society's experience was that such was not the case. The constant vigilance of these societies throughout the world did do much, however, to lessen it. The hidden number competition was won by Mrs. McDowell (auction), and Mrs. W. Neuinegan (auction), Mrs. C. W. Robinson (contract), and Mrs. Stanley Haycock (mah-jongg). The' ladies' bridge committee comprised:—Mrs. B. J. Marquct (convener), Mrs. A.
