OLYMPIC GAMES
CLAIMS OF P. E. MATH lESON Having sot a precedent by making the late selection of V. P. Boot and G. R. Giles for the Olympic Games in Berlin, the Olympic and Empire Games Association is now confronted with another problem as a result of the determination of the Otago Centre of the Now Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to have the national backstroke champion, P. E. Mathieson, included in the Dominion team. The New Zealand Swimming Council refused to support Matliieson's nomination, but not content to let the matter rest, the Otago Centre has requested the Olympic Council to act for Matliieson's benefit. The council will now have to decide whether it is justified in ignoring the swimming council's opinion by considering Mathieson's claims. His time of 71s for 100 metres last week was a good performance, and it will be interesting to see how well he swims in his .attack on the New Zealand record to-night.
