WORK ON ROADS
WAIPA COUNTY PLANS GOVERNMENT POLICY AWAITED - * [bv telegraph —OWN correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday Proposals to seal over 1 2 miles of main roads in the county at a total cost of £270,000 were considered at yesterday's meeting of tho W aipa County Council. It was pointed out that lack of information as to the Government's roading policy had created a position of uncertainty, and in tho discussion which followed opinion was divided ns to whether the council should proceed immediately with the preparatory formalities or wait until more \\ as know n of the Government's legislation dealing with the control of highways. Tho chairman, Mr. S. C. Macky, said that the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. 11. Semple, had made it clear that main arterial roads were to become the charge of the Government. Mr. E. F. Peacocko thought that discussion should be deferred until tho Government's intentions wero soecificallv announced. The county engineer, Mr. J. W. Civil, said that the order in which the roads would be dealt with would be in nroportion +o tho burden of traffic that was carried.
Notice of motion was given by Mr. Mackv to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise a loan for the council's share of the amount involved in tho construction. LOOAL BODIES' POSITION QUESTION OF FUTURE CONTROL [from oue own correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday When tho question of raising money for the completion of the permanent construction of a portion of the Hamil-ton-Paeroa main highway at Hinton's Gully came up for discussion at a meeting of the Waikato County Council to-day, tho chairman, Mr. J. A. Sampson, said the Government's policy relating to main highways was obscure. Mr. Sampson wondered whether tho council was doing the right thing in proceeding with permanent works on main highways when it was likely titoat the complete cohtrol of all theso highways would bo taken over by tho Govcapital works the council did tho better, although it woijld completo tho jobs in hand. Mr. Sampson said thero was no doubt tho Government'would take over the Hamilton-Paeroa, HamiltonCambridge, and Pokeno-l'acroa roads, but he did not know what it would do with respect to such secondary roads as the Hamiiton-Gordouton highway. It was decided to proceed with tho work in hand on the Hamilton-Paeroa main highway. Hinton's Gully road is to be tar-sealed, and a cut is to bo made through Mr. Wcnzl Scholium's proporty .it Motumaoho, a deviation which will considerably shorten tho route between Hamilton and Morrinsville.
