MEETING CONCLUDED ONE FAVOURITE WINS SPRINT RUN IN RAINSTORM autumn handicap surprise SUCCESS OF SCOTLAND As was tho case 011 Saturday, only one first favourite was successful on tho concluding day of the Avondale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting yesterday. However, the dividends generally were of smaller dimensions. There was a good attendance and, excepting for tho intervention of a very heavy rainstorm prior to and during tho running of the sixth race, tho Mount Eden Handicap, the weather; was fine, but overcast. So heavy was tho rain that the horses could not bo seen until they were well into the straight, and even then they could not be very clearly distinguished. Sergia gained an outstanding victory in the Dominion Handicap, but tho other races wcro very keenly eontested. Investments for the day totalled £20,455 1 os, compared with £15,181 for the second day last y;>ar, an increase of £5274 10s. Thespis jumped to the front- at the fence near the six furlongs, and Swift Spear fell at the next, bringing down King Mestor. Thespis was then left in charge from Benighted rfnd Golden England, with Lap Up moving up. Rounding the turn Lap Up ran to the front and was first into the straight from Benighted, Thespis and Golden England. Benighted led over the last fence just ahead of Lap Up and Thespis, and Lap Up finished best to win a good race by a neck from - Benighted, with Thesp s a similar distance away third. Overdue and Mainland were smartest to begin and they were the early leaders from Hohana and Sergia. With two furlongs covered Hohana was in command, and she led across the top from Paso Robles, Overdue, Thangilamba (who was running up on the outside), Mainland, Sergia and Solas. Lntering the straight Hohana, Paso Robles and Thangilainha were abreast in the lead from Mainland and Sergia. Once in line for the post Sergia soon ran to the leaders, and she drew a^' a J to win easily by three and a-half lengths from Mainland, who defeated the fast-finishing Gay P.ipa by a length. Shy was badly left and Matoru was first away from Red Flame, Gallant Knight and Sebrof. When the field had settled down Sebrof was in command from Teakf Matoru, Gallant Knight, Solo Song, Queen Nona, Red Flame, f. Lord Wiilonyx and Triune. Rounding the home turn Sebrof and Solo Song were together in the load from Teak, Gallant Knight, Queen Nona, Matoru and Lord Wiilonyx. Going along the back Galileo was the leader from Sinking Fi nd, Royal Secret, Knight nf Australia, Bonny Gay, Day Wind, Velocipede and Scotland. Passing the half-mile Galilee, Royal Secret and Knight of Australia were in close order ahead of Sinking Fund and Bonny Gay, who were together, with Day Wind, Scotland and Velocipede following. Filtering the straight Galileo, Royal Secret and Knight of Australia were abreast in the lead from Sinking Fund, Bonny Gay Scotland, Day Wind and Velocipede. Nja'r the distance Velocipedo challenged on the inside and Scotland on the outside, Scotland finishing best to win by half a length from Gav Rose, who came very fast. Persian Lady led for about a furlong and a-half and then fell, Te Broney going over her. Tidalia then went to the front and at the half-mile she was the leader from Tutor, Valise, Loombination, Full o' Scotch, Le Chasseur and Hunting Maid. Rounding the turn Tutor headed Tidalia and they were followed by Loombination, Le Chasseur (rails), Valise and Full o' Scotch. Loombination ran on strongly over the last furlong to win by a length from Tutor, who defeated Full o' Scotch by half a length. HONOURS AT AVONDALE THE LEADINC WINNERS As the result of tho victory of Loombination each day at Avondalo Mrs. A. Loomb headed tho winning owners' list with £2lO. Mr. B. Clarke, owner of Sinking Fund, and Mr. W. J. McLean, owner-trainer of Scotland, each won £2OO. Mr. H. Rowan, as owner-trainer of Tonnerre, secured £loo. Tho most successful trainers wero W. H. Patterson, who produced Thangilamba and Lap Up, and R. R. Savage, who trains Loombination. N. R. McKenzie and R. Glading rode three winners, W. J. Broughton and P. Fearn two. AVONDALE INQUIRIES EFFECT OF RAIN CONSIDERED After the falling of Persian Lady and Te Broney in tho Mount Roskill Handicap at the Avondale Jockey Club's meeting yesterday, the committee sat to inquire whether the course had been mado unsafe by the heavy rain. As the result of its observations, reinforced by the opinions of several racing people, it was decided to continue tho programme, and the last race, the Morningsido Handicap, was run accordingly. The judicial committee also held an inquiry into the cause of C. L. Goulsbro's falling from Hohana in the Rosebank Handicap on tho first day. The evidence of several jockeys in the race was heard and it was decided that the interference was accidental, no blame being attachable to anyone.
