FIFTY YEARS AGO
UNEMPLOYMENT QUESTION The question of the unemployed iu New Zealand is not a new one. Efforts to solve the problem were made 50 years ago. The following extract appeared in the Nkw Zealand Herald of April 21. 188(3: "A meeting of the unemployed washeld last night in the Temperance Hall, Albert Street. Owing to the night being Wet there was not a large atten dance, about 90 or 100 being present. His Worship the Mayor presided and said that the meeting had been by the Trades and Labour Council, i was moved and carried that 'the meet ing, recognising the fact that thenwere large numbers of able-bodied, m dustrious men now out of employmen in Auckland, very many of whom ai<unable to provide the necessaries oi life for themselves and their famines most urgently press u|xm the Govern ment the duty of providing foi t" necessity which has arisen bv creatm,. employment at a rate of wages s cient to secure the means for those willing to work.
