CHARTING UPPER AIR
AVIATION IN PACIFIC APPARATUS ON BOARD LINER [from our own correspondent] HONOLULU, March 31 Air current and wind velocity tests as an aid to transpacific air commerce are now being carried out on board the Matson liner Malolo, running between San Francisco and Honolulu. The indications are that in the near future the tests will become routine procedure on board the liners Monterey and Mariposa, which ply between New Zealand, Australia and California. The observations are being made under the direction of Mr. J. H. Van Patten, of the United States weather bureau, who arrived at Honolulu on the Malolo and who will instruct ship's officers of all the large Matson liners in the procedure involved. According to the plans, tests at sea will be made at certain hours to fit in with a general plan of tests throughout the United States and in other parts of the Pacific Thus a comprehensive picture of weather conditions over a wide area at the samp hour of the dav will be obtained.
Tests are to be conducted with the usual balloon equipment up to altitudes of 17,000 feet.
