FALSE DECLARATION
MAN RECEIVING RELIEF FULL EARNINGS NOT SHOWN [by telegraph—own t correspondent] GISBORNE, Monday For making a false declaration regarding liis income in a return required by the Unemployment Act Stanley Sheldrake was fined £3 and costs by Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Mr. P. Fulton, who prosecuted, stated that defendant had been registered as unemployed during tho past five years under the name of Sheldrake. He had made a declaration that he bad earned money from two Gisborne firms, but had omitted to account for £ll 19s 9d earned on the wharf under the name of S. Turner. As a result the Government had paid out excess relief totalling £6 IDs 3d.
Mr. S. Beaufoy, on behalf of defendant, said that Sheldrake's stepfather's name was Turner and defendant had gone under that name for 18 years when working on the wharf. Tho Magistrate: Ho can adopt what name ho likes, but he is not entitled to make false declarations.
Mr. Beaufoy added that defendant was married, with four children, and had had much sickness in tho family during the past two years. All tho family had been sick at different times and dire necessity had made defendant get in all the money he could.
The magistrate said that making a false declaration was a very serious matter, but he would tako into account what counsel said and fine defendant £3 and costs. A month was allowed in which to pay.
