VARIABLE WINDS HEAVY RAIN ON EAST COAST The weather report and forecast for New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows:—A deep depression is centred north of East Cape, while another is located over the central Tnsman Sea.

Both are moving in a south-easterly direction. The indications are for southwest to north-west winds prevailing north of Auckland, elsewhere south-east to north-east at first, hut later southerlies becoming mere general, with gales nt first in the north-eastern portion of the North Island, elsewhere light to moderate, but freshening and at times squally. Seas in Now Zealand waters rough north of Banks Peninsula, elsewhere slight to moderate, but gradually rising. Eastern Tasman Sea: East to south winds and rather rough to rough seas, but winds temporarily backing westerly. The weather is likely to b<3 cloudy to overcast, with mist or fog in many places and rain in most districts, with some heavy falls, especially between Hawke's Bay and East Cape. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST CLOUDY, WITH SOME RAIN The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Moderate westerly winds veering temporarily to north-west, but later again backing to south-west and freshening. The weather is likely to be mainly cloudy to overcast, and with rain at times. Seas rough on the east coast and moderate on the west. WEEK-END WEATHER Auckland. —The weather was very changeable and wet during the weekend, the wind being fresh to strong easterly on Saturday and light southwest yesterday. Continuous rain was experienced after midnight on Saturday, but toward mid-dav yesterday the weather improved, but' the conditions continued overcast and unsettled. The temperature at 4 p.m. yesterday was 64 degrees. After falling "for 20 hours the barometer registered 29.50 in yesterday morning. It afterwards remained steady for eight hours and then rose slightly. Barometer, midnight, steady .. 29.60 in. Midnight, Saturday .. .. 29,80 in, Wellington.—The weather on Saturday was calm and fine, although overcast in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees. Early yesterday morning a very light southerly wind sprang up, but the day was mostly calm and overcast. Light rain set in about noon and continued intermittently throughout the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 64.1 degrees. Christchurch.—Generally the weather was cloudy and overcast. The conditions were mild on Saturday, but the weather was cool yesterday. The barometer was falling steadily, and yesterday afternoon the reading was 29.68 in. Dunedin.—The sun shone brightly for an uninterrupted period of eight hours and a-half on Saturday, and conditions generalh- were fine. There was a light breeze from the north-east. Bright sunshine, with a light north-easterly breeze, prevailed again yesterday, when the temperature reached a maximum of 64 degrees.
