EAST COAST RAILWAY
DATE OF STARTING WORK AN EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Saturday Since the announcement was made, that the Government intended to proceed at the earliest moment with the completion of the Napier-Gisborne railway, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, has been swamped with applications from men wanting work on the job. The Minister said to-day that he was not yet in a position to state when a start would lie made with the work, but an early announcement would be made.
Regarding applications from men wanting to go on the job, he said they had been made to him in thousands. He could not say exactly how many applications there were, but 5000 would probably be somewhere near the mark.
