ACTIVITIES OF JAPANESE
ISLAND IN TORRES STRAIT LESSEE CLAIMS PROTECTION '(Heceived April 19, 5.6 p.m.) BHISBANE. April 19 Mr. W» Turnbull, lessee of Hicks Island, near Thursday Island, Torres Strait, declares that a Japanese sampan has used his island as a depot for crude oil supplies and that the Japanese stole some of hiii property. He has requested the Minister of Customs to obtain protection for a man named Charles Peters, who is employed by him on Haggerston Islands, three miles from Hicks Island.
' Residents of the island, says Mr. Turnbull, Trill have to use firearms if they are not protested. A message from Melbourne states that the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. White,' has ordered an immediate inquiry into the reports of activities of Japanese sampans on Hicks Island. Mr. White has also directed the Queensland Customs officials to hire launches where necessary to apprehend offenders.
