ISLAND IN TORRES STRAIT LESSEE CLAIMS PROTECTION '(Heceived April 19, 5.6 p.m.) BHISBANE. April 19 Mr. W» Turnbull, lessee of Hicks Island, near Thursday Island, Torres Strait, declares that a Japanese sampan has used his island as a depot for crude oil supplies and that the Japanese stole some of hiii property. He has requested the Minister of Customs to obtain protection for a man named Charles Peters, who is employed by him on Haggerston Islands, three miles from Hicks Island.

' Residents of the island, says Mr. Turnbull, Trill have to use firearms if they are not protested. A message from Melbourne states that the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. White,' has ordered an immediate inquiry into the reports of activities of Japanese sampans on Hicks Island.
