FIFTY YEARS AGO
LARRIKINISM PREVALENT The activities of hooligans in the city and suburbs frequently prompted newspaper correspondents of half a century ago to declare that the youth of the day was "going to the dogs." The following item in connection with the larrikin nuisance in Parnell appeared in the Xkw Zkalaxd Hkrat.u of April 20. 1886:
" Larrikinism is increasing in Parnell and complaints are numerous just now of the frequency of the mischievous practice of riding bicycles along, th l " footpaths of the borough, especially at dusk, to the imminent danger of the lives of pedestridi&s. This nuisance has grown to such proportions as to ba\e become quite intolerable. " Young children have also taken to trundling hoops and practising games 011 the newlv-asphalted -P , s and, copying the example set them 7 their elders, use insulting language when remonstrated with. The Parne Borough Council intends to take in the matter by prosecuting the ° cn ders should they persist in their systematic breach of the by-laws.
