CONTESTS. IN COUNTRY OPENING MATCHES DECIDED SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS The Rugby football season was opened in some country centres of the Auckland province on Saturday afternoon, while chair.pionship competitions were commenced by southern unions. All the senior clubs in Auckland held practice games in preparation for the opening of the season on Saturday week. The following results of games played in the country were forwarded by Herald correspondents:—i

Rotorua.—The fin t Rugby match of the scuson in Hotorua ivhb played between the Waikite Club aud Ruatoki, winner of the 1935 Whakatane championship. Ruatoki showed the better combination throughout and eventually won 16—6, a feature being the excellent play ol Broderick. the 1935 Maori All Black, v ho scored three of the winner's tries.

Morrinsville.—The season opened with unofficial matches. The only senior game was at Waihou, v here Old Boys played Wailiou. Morrinsvil.e results were: Terrier juniors 15 points, tries by Yardley. Watt (3) and Wetere, defeated City (Hamilton) juniors, 3, a try liy Campbell. Old Boys thirds defeated Cit;.' (Hamilton) thirds by 12 points to nil. Whakatane.—The first Rugby football match of the seasor was played at Whakatane before a very good attendance. Awakeri, of the Rangitaiki Union, defeated Wairaka (Whakatane) in a closely and keeniy-contestcd mutch. For a game so early in the season it was regarded as being a very good exhibition of the Rugby code. The piny wan marked by fierce forward struggles, interspersed with brilliant rushes by the rearguard. The scorer for Wairaka was ,T. Di>dd, two tries, one of which was converted by I. Riini. P. Day (2) and C. Wickhfim scored for Awaken. M. Davies converted one try. Whangarei.—The Whangarei Rugby Union opened its season in steady rain. The Auckland Training College senior team defeated Old Boys senior team by eight points to nil. The game wan played on the Whangarei High School ground, which was in first-class condition. A strong cross wind was blowing, and the piny was mostly of a forward nature. The visitors had a much heavier pack than their opponents, and held the upper hand in this department. They were also superior to the local team in the back divisicn.
