NUFFIELD TRUST

CRIPPLED CHILDREN £I3OO FOR DISTRIBUTION QUESTION OF MAYORS' FUNDS [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON. Sunday A sum of £I3OO will be available this month for distribution to assist crippled New Zealand children. At a meeting held in Wellington of the Nuffield Trustees it was resolved that this information be passed on to the New Zealand Crippled Children Society and that the society be asked to ascertain and report to the trustees the work done up to the present aiid proposed to be done by the various district societies and to inform the trustees of the allocation suggested by the New Zealand Crippled Children Society of the amount available.

The honorary secretary, Mr. E. W. Hunt, submitted to the trustees a statement of finances, which disclosed the following balances: —Current account at Bank of New Zealand, £lßl l.'3s 3d; deposit account Bank of New Zealand, £61,000, together with bankers' certificate verifying and showing accrued interest on £60,000 deposit of £1270 15s 9d, and on £IOOO of £l2 10s lOd. The £60,000 was redegosited on April 9, arrangements being made for part cancellation if the trustees so desired. Funds Collected by Mayors It had been suggested at a previous conference of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society that the funds collected by the mayors to supplement the Nuffield Trust Fund of £50,000 be paid into the Nuffield Trust and that the trust pay half to the branch in the particular district in which the individual sums were collected.

This suggestion was discussed by the trustees, it being pointed out that conditions have changed, and inasmuch as a large portion of the funds collected by the mayors has not been paid to the Nuffield Trust Fund, the trustees decided to invite the New Zealand Crippled Children Society to reconsider the position in view of the altered conditions and submit their amended suggestions. In reply to a recommendation from the society that if it be found essential for the relief of cripples to encroach on the capital of the Nuffield gift this should be done and that no relief should be refused solely in order to preserve the fund, the trustees agreed to bear the recommendation in mind. Income From Endowment Fund A further motion from the society:— "That the income from the £IO,OOO endowment fund donated by Lord Nuffield be allocated to the W. 11. Wilson Home until such time as other national crippled children's homes are established in New Zealand"—was dealt with by the trustees deciding to ask the society to deal with the subject when they considered the allocation of the £I3OO referred to previously. It was emphasised that the trustees will be glad at any time to discuss with the central committee of the society the general disposition of any funds available and general policy of assisting the crippled children of the Dominion. The trustees decided to set up an investment committee, consisting of Sir James Grose, Messrs. C. J. B. Norwood and J. M. A. Ilott, authorised to deal with mortgage securities if submitted, and further that they be authorised to consider applications for loans of not less than £2500 on urban securities., CAMPAIGN AT ROTORUA MORE THAN £2BO SUBSCRIBED [by telegraph—own correspondent] ROTORUA, Baturday The final report of the committee which organised the campaign to secure funds for' the endowment of the Wilson home for crippled children, indicates that over £2BO has been subscribed in the Rotorua district. This is a considerable increase on the £2OO aimed at by the committee.
