DESTRUCTION BY DEER
NATIVE TREES BARKED " ERADICATION IMPOSSIBLE " [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WANGANUI, Monday The ranger for the Wanganui Aclimatisation Society, Mr. W. Storey, with Mr. H. Meads, of Bulls, has just returned from a deer-stalking expedition in the Putara Valley, between Eketahuna and Masterton. He speaks in no uncertain manner of the damage to native trees by red deer, and says hundreds of acres have been barked, removing all protection for the younger growth. Deer culling parties have secured 1300 deer along the range as far as Kaitoke, close to Upper Hutt, but in Mr. Storey's opinion it will be utterly impossible ever to eradicate the deer.
