AUSTRALIAN BEEF

SHIPMENTS TO BRITAIN MEAT BOARD URGES DELAY SUPPLIES EXCEEDING QUOTA ; The Australian Meat Board last week decided to recommend to the Common- i wealth Government that action should . be taken, through the Department of Commerce, to delay shipments of beef to the United Kingdom. Figures presented to the board showed that, after allowing for slaughterings of beef, which ordinarily would be shipped in time to arrive in the United Kingdom prior to June 30 next, it was found that available supplies would exceed Australia's quota of 578,000cwt. for tho first half of 1936, The chairman, Mr. A. C. Fisken, M.P., stated it was not possible for the board to form any reliable estimate of the probable mutton and lamb shipments for the last-half of 19.36, but it was reasonable to anticipate that the liberal quota allowed Australia, would meet requirements. The recommendation of tho executive of the board that Australian-wide standards should be set up for the grading of mutton and lamb was adopted unanimously. Proposals adopted provide for the substitution of first, second and third quality for the existing official g.a.q. and f.a.q. standards.
