NAPIER CATHEDRAL

• AN APPEAL FOR FUNDS DEAN'S CAMPAIGN IN ENGLAND [from our own correspondent] LONDON, March 14 Dean Brocklehurst, of Waiapu, now on a visit to England, is appealing for help toward rebuilding Napier Cath<»dral. •• Apart from the loss of life and personal suffering,' 1 ' writes the Dean in the Guardian and other Church papers, " all our churches, schools arid vicarages —about 30 buildings—were damaged by the earthquake. Having no money, wo were obliged to borrow £30,000 for repairs, and the greater part of this debt is still owing by our diocese. " The cathedral of Napier was totally wrecked, and later swept by fire, destroying everything that might hav»* been recovered. It is unquestionably a fact that had someone from New Zealand visited the Mother Country and made an appeal at the time the necessary money would have been forthcoming. Realising the spiritual needs of our people, we built a temporary wooden" church on the cathedral site. Then came the financial depression. In spite of this double knock our people have not only supported the Church, but have started a ' Friends of the Cathedral Fund ' as a gesture of their keenness to rebuild the cathedral. Knowing that they cannot do this unaided, I have come to England to raise fund.s for it. It is estimated to cost from £50,000 to £60,000. Lord Bledisloe is supporting the appeal and is helping ug in many ways."
