MISHAP TO WAHINE
BOW RUDDER JAMMED EXCURSION INCIDENT VESSEL DELAYED THREE HOURS [by telegraph OWN corrf.spondext] "WELiLiN'GTON, Monday On the Easter Monday excursion to Marlborough Sounds with 1400 holiday. 1 makers on board, the Union Company't ' steamer Wahine met with a mishap to its bow rudder, which jammed to the starboard as the vessel was turning f after leaving Picton for the homeward journey. As, until the rudder was locked straight, the steamer could not proceed, the Wahine lay in the stream off the township for about three hours. When the Wahine pulled out stern first from the Picton wharf, the vessel backed some distance down Queen Charlotte Sound. It then turned, heading for the Tory Channel, and the first officer went below to screw down the locking pin used to hold the bow, rudder in a fore and aft position. Hs found that the rudder would not straighten up, and the steering gear had to be uncoupled before the rudder could bo moved into its proper position. It was then locked straight, and the vessel left for Wellington, arriving at 8.30 p.m., and was berthed with the stern steering gear only. The Wahine sailed with 800 passengers for Lyttelton at 10 o'clock with the bow rudder still locked straight.
