CONFERENCE IN HAMILTON DEBATING CONTESTS HELD [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The annual conference and competitions of the North Island branch of the Federated Catholic Clubs of New Zealand was opened in Hamilton on Saturday. Mr. H. Knowles Smith presided at the opening session. A message was received from Bishop Liston wishing the conference every success.
A debate on the subject, "That a redistribution of colonial possessions is now just and practicable," was won by Messrs. W. Orange and W. Green, of Masterton, who defeated Messrs. F. Bullot and P. Powell, of New Plymouth. The winners took the negative side. Messrs. M. James and J. It. Fitzgerald (Frankton) defeated Messrs. It. Ockleford and J. Kemble Heart, Auckland) in the second debate. The Rev. Brother Remigus was adjudicator.
The results of the tennis competitions were: —H. Curran (Sacred Heart) beat Miss M. A. Kurtz (New Plymouth), 9 —7; R. Johnston (Masterton) beat J. Farrell (Onehunga), 9—5. T. McGuire (Onehunga) defeated J. Treston (Sacred Heart) by 100 points to 48 at billiards, and R. Cross (Masterton) defeated T. Wallace (Frankton) by 100 points to 68. With a total of 14J points the Masterton Catholic Club retained the Redwood Shield, the Auckland University Catholic Students being second with 10£ points, and Auckland Marist Brothers' Old Boys, 8£ points, occupied third place. Following are the results of the various sections: —Debating, Frankton Hibernian Club (M. James and J. R. Fitz-Gerald), 1. Best speaker in the competition: J. R. Fitz-(3erald, 1; R; Cotterill (Auckland), 2; K. James and M. K. Joseph, equal, 3. Oratory: J. P. liogan (Masterton), 1; R. Ward (Auckland Marist), and Miss B. Cahill (Auckland University), equal, 2; K. McCarthy (Sacred Heart College) and Miss W. Quinn (Hawera), equal, 3. Impromptu speech: J. C. Reid (Auckland University), 76 points, 1; M. James (Frankton), 72 points, 2; W. I. Green (Masterton), 70 points, 3. Elocution: H. Ward, 1; Miss Cahill, 2; S. Herbert (Masterton) and Miss W. Quinn (Hawera), equal, 3. Religious questions: J. P. Hogan (Masterton), 1; J. C. Reid (Auckland University), 2; Miss Terry (Students' Guild), 3.
