LEAVING COMMAND
CAPTAIN CAMERON'S FUTURE [by telegraph—pbess association] WELLINGTON, Saturday The board of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company, Limited, after giving due consideration to the finding of the Court of Inquiry, has decided that Captain W. D. Camoron will relinquish command of the Itangatira. He will proceed shortly to England on private leave aud will bring out from the Clyde the steamer Kauri now building there for the company.
The finding of tho Court as given by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, who presided at tho rehearing of the inquiry into the stranding of tho Kangatira, was that Captain Cameron was not justified in his absolute conclusion as to where the vessel was just before tho grounding and that ho made an error of judgment in proceeding at speed without first ascertaining his position definitely. However, because of his unblemished record over many years, his superb seamanship after the grounding, and the abnormal conditions of tide which set the ship oil' her course, the Court considered that the captain'e certificate should not be affected, and it was later handed back to him
