EASTER RACING CARNIVAL [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday The Easter Racing; Carnival opened at the Addington Trotting Course today when the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club held an interesting ana well attended meeting. ' The weather was line and sunny but a biting east wind made many women decide that fur coats were the most comfortable wear for the occasion. In the shelter of the stands, however, protected from wind and with the sun shining brightly, conditions ' were very pleasant. Many smart tailored wore worn with a great variety of blouses, some of Swiss muslin smocked in gay colours, others of lace or georgette, while many favoured snugly fitting wool lace or wool jumpers. .Brown and blue in a full range of the deeper shades were very popular. Hats were nearly all of felt or velour and showed a great diversity of shapes. Haloes, shovels, Breton*sailors, Legionnaires—all appeared in many colours, while many women remained faithful to hats with medium brims tilted on one side.

Mrs. J. H. Williams, wife of the president of the club, wore a navy suit with a Biskra blouse, skunk stole and navv felt hat. She was accompanied by her daughters, .Miss Margaret Williams wearing a brown suit with a tomato wool jumper and brown halo hat, and Miss Janet Williams in a nutmeg suit, beige wool jumper laced with brown cord and a brown hat with mastic quill. In their party was Miss Joan Hargreaves, wearing a brown tailored frock, ilecked tweed coat with wide fur collar and brown hat with a chromium buckle. Mrs. J. W. Beanland, whose husband was recently elected Mayor, wore a brown suit with a honeybeige blouse, a seal coat and brown velour hat with a brown and orange feather mount. Mrs. Hayward, wife of the Hon. William Hayward, a steward of the club, wore a navy suit with squirrel stole and navy liat.

At St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester Street, this afternoon the marriage was celebrated of Miss Valmai Falloon and Mr. Harold Shaw. The bridegroom is a prominent member of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society, with which he has acted with great success and has been stage manager for the society for the last few years.

Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Duncan and Miss Relda Duncan are leaving on Thursday for England, and this afternoon Dr. and Mrs. P. Stanley Foster gave a large cocktail party in their honour. Guests included Sir Cyril and Lady Ward, Dr. and Mrs John Stevenson, Dr. and Mrs. Ernest Cooke, Dr. and .Mrs. Leslie Avcrill and Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Anderson.
