FROCKS AT ELLERSLIE

NEW GREENS AND REDS SUMMER AND AUTUMN MIXED HATS "AS YOU PLEASE" The Easter Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club is always a popular one to which visitors come from all over the Dominion. Thus it was that on Saturday, the opening day, although so many Auckland people have wandered further afield for the holidays, the stands were tilled with eager spectators of the races prepared to make the most of the day and its varying fortunes. The weather was delightful until the middle of the afternoon, when light, drizzling showers set in and forced people to seek shelter. With its inset Hower beds and borders ablaze with French marigolds, cannas in rich colourings of gold, coral pink and crimson, bonfire salvia and josephines, Ellerslie was looking vefry attractive and made a bright relief for the somewhat sombre dressing of the women race-goers. So mild has the weather been during the past few days that it was not surprising ttx see a mixture of summer and autumn tracking. Fur coats and light crepe de chine frocks were seen side by side, and printed silks with big straw iiats beside heavy tweed coats and tiny felt hats. There was much of black to l>e seen in the frocking, but here and there the sombre effect was broken by touches of the new season's colours —vintage, Kenya red, Gloucester green, plumberry and Peking blue. The terra cotta and the plum wine shades were particularly attractive and one of the smartest frocks in the latter shade was made with a turn-over flat collar and buckle decorated with many coloured jewels in the latest fashion. It was worn with a smart little hat of plum velvet to match. Green was also very popular and ranged from Gloucester green to a soft, grev green, which was seen in a smartly tailored suit worn with an ivory satin blouse and green hat of the same material. Navy blue was also much worn, also a deeper Peking blue and a sprinkling of the very lovely rich spindleberry that is one of the newer colourings. Befeathered hats are again making their appearance and here and there were to be seen high-crowned hats that were given a still higher appearance by a cluster of coque feathers that rose above them. Quills, too, gave a jaunty appearance to others, and very insouciant also were the little velvet caps with their two peaks that were either pulled out wide on either side of the weaVer's face or cocked a little to the front. Another type was the halo hat but this, which is eminently becoming to most vouthful faces, was not so widely worn as might have been imagined. This season, women evidently can allow their fancy to run riot in the matter of hats, for there is no restriction in shape, size, type or kind. They can be as individualistic as they please and still feel that they are keeping within fashion's demands —a dangerous liberty, perhaps! Among those who were present were: Mrs. H. M.
