UNEMPLOYMENT
Sir, —I am sorry I cannot agree with Mr. Stone on unemployment, it seems to me to be quite self-evident that if a man is compelled to retire on pension after 40 years' service, instead of remaining till 45 years have passed, he will make room for one of the unemployed for five years. Again, if he ig refused permission to take up an ap. pointment when he is on pension he will again help the unemployed. Thirdly, if schoolchildren are kept in school a year longer they will not only, have a better training, but many thousands will be off the unemployed list for a year. I don't think anyone can contradict these statements. As far as going on to the land, Professor ' Belshaw has pointed out that a big increase in production may lead us to saturation point, i.e., the price for our produce may sink so low as to render k it unpayable.
